How to Prevent Complications After Your Surgery

December 4, 2020

Observing proper postoperative care is vital to a full recovery after having surgery. Therefore, it is crucial to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions in order to lower your risk of experiencing complications while you heal.

Depending on the procedure and your health history, potential complications can include surgical wound infection, pain, or blood clots. These post-op complications are preventable by carefully following the instructions you’re given and by not being careless.

Let’s take a look at some key steps you can take to prevent complications after your procedure:

Prepare Beforehand for Your Recovery

Do not hesitate to ask your surgeon any and all questions you have both before and after your surgery. Before the procedure, ask about your recovery process and how long it should take. It would also help to know whether you will need a caregiver for days immediately after being discharged.

Take Your Prescription Medication

You will likely be prescribed medication such as antibiotics and oral pain relievers. Likewise, it’s essential to keep in touch with your surgeon and to follow your recommended schedule for checkups after the surgery.

Incision Care After Surgery

Your surgeon will place a sterile dressing on your surgical wound. Your wound’s dressing will usually be kept on for the next day or two unless signs of infection begin to appear. The purpose of the dressing is to ensure that the wound fills in with healthy new tissue as your skin closes. It also absorbs drainage.

Any wound, regardless of size, will take time to heal. Your surgeon will ask you to follow appropriate instructions for changing the dressing and cleaning the wound.

While your wound is still healing, do not apply any lotion or cream in or around the wound unless your doctor approves. Do not take a bath, because your wound must be kept dry; you will be told the best way to keep your body clean.

Likewise, you should frequently check for any signs of infection as you are recovering. If you observe anything like tan, green, or yellow discharge, or if you have a fever, inform your surgeon immediately.

Balance Rest and Activity After Surgery

Your doctor will tell you not to overdo things, but you should not be completely stationary – otherwise, you could develop blood clots. One of the most high-risk complications after having surgery is a blood clot due to inactivity, and this risk can be greatly reduced by staying in motion and maintaining healthy circulation.

However, it’s vital to remember not to force yourself into too much activity. Talk to your surgeon and your physical therapist about your gradual return to activity.
