Spine Injections for Treating Back Pain

August 27, 2021

Woman with back pain

Dogged by back pain that doesn’t seem to respond to rest, physical therapy, medications, or other noninvasive modalities?

Your pain management specialist will likely recommend spine injections, which they will directly administer into a specific area in your spine using image guidance (fluoroscopy imaging).

Read on to learn more about spine injections, particularly the specific types as well as their benefits in addition to providing pain relief.

Types of Spine Injections

There are several types of spine injections, and these are often named according to the area of the spine into which they are administered.

The following are a few of the commonly used spine injections:

  • Epidural steroid injections (ESIs)- ESIs feature a combination of anesthetic and steroid medication, which is administered into the epidural space to suppress pain and alleviate inflammation.

ESIs can help permanently address back pain in patients suffering from a new disc herniation. For patients with chronic back pain from recurrent disc herniations, ESIs can provide relief for up to six months.

  • Cervical, thoracic, or lumbar facet joint injections- These are applied to the facet joints, which are tiny joints in between the vertebrae that provide the spine with stability and enable it to move.

Facet joint injections have a success rate of up to 75 percent, providing effective neck and back pain relief for up to several months in most patients.

  • Sacroiliac joint injections (SIs)- This type of spine injection is administered into the sacroiliac joints, which connect the sacrum (the bottom part of the spine) to the pelvis.

SIs, like some of the other types of spine injections, can take up to three days to take effect, but they can provide low back pain relief for up to several months.

Benefits

Although pain relief is the main reason patients look into spine injections, the benefits go beyond it. These include:

  • Reduced reliance on oral medications
  • Return to normal activities or active lifestyle
  • Surgery postponement
  • Tackling the source of your pain- Unlike pain medications, which only provide a band-aid solution than an actual fix, spinal injections fix the source of the pain and work their way up to prevent it from worsening.
