Signs You May Need a Shoulder Replacement

August 21, 2020

Shoulder Replacement

There are many possible causes of shoulder pain – it can be due to trauma, overuse, or pre-existing underlying medical conditions. Mild to moderate shoulder pain may only require conservative (nonsurgical) treatments, such as over-the-counter pain relievers.

However, when the discomfort is chronic or it is limiting your ability to move your shoulder, and you’ve tried everything from pain-relief injections to physical therapy, your orthopedic doctor may recommend a shoulder replacement. Let’s talk about some of the main reasons why patients have a shoulder replacement, and who you can ask about what treatment would be best for your ailing shoulder.

Severe Chronic Shoulder Pain

One possible cause of shoulder pain and lack of movement is osteoarthritis, which occurs when the protective cartilage between the bones in joint breaks down over time. This condition leads to the bones rubbing against each other whenever you move, thus causing pain.

Conservative modes of treatment are generally considered first, such as corticosteroid injections or physical therapy. But in severe cases of joint dysfunction or chronic shoulder pain, it’s best to consult with an experienced orthopedic surgeon. A shoulder replacement may be the best way to avoid suffering further pain.

Shoulder Discomfort Even When Resting

Experiencing pain when in motion is typical if you have an injured shoulder. However, have you been feeling shoulder pain even while at rest, such as when trying to fall asleep at night?

If so, this is another warning sign that you may need a shoulder replacement. When you consult with your orthopedic doctor, be sure to explain that you are feeling discomfort even when resting.

Loss of Movement

If your shoulder is completely immobilized, you may have a broken bone in the joint. This type of injury may be moderate or severe – and if it is severe, shoulder replacement is likely necessary.

With a fractured shoulder, severe shoulder arthritis, or a badly torn rotator cuff, your range of motion will be drastically limited. It will be challenging or impossible to move the shoulder and arm without experiencing pain. The injury may also cause your shoulder to feel weak, further restricting your movement.

Failure of Conservative Treatments

Doctors will first exhaust conservative treatments when a person experiences discomfort in any part of their body. These methods include medication, ice therapy, heat therapy, and physical therapy.

When nonsurgical treatment options do not improve your condition, your doctor may suggest shoulder replacement. You and your doctor will discuss which type of surgery would be best in your case and how soon you will be able to get back to enjoying your active lifestyle.

Muscle and joint pain can often be addressed using nonsurgical treatment methods. However, if you experience severe pain even while at rest, weakness, and limited movement, and conservative methods are not alleviating your symptoms, you may need a shoulder replacement.
